Derby Name: Commander Cupcake
Derby #: 375
Is there a story behind your name and number? I used to be a cake decorator, so cupcakes were my life. 375 degrees is a pretty common baking temperature.
What year did you start roller derby? My first season started in 2012, but i took a break in the middle of 2013. I started playing again three years later in 2016, and im so happy to be back!
What roller derby team(s) have/do you play for? I’ve played for the Mad Dollies (<3), Counterstrike and Gate City.
Your Athletic background? I was a total couch potato before derby. I played some danced and played some sports when i was younger, but nothing to brag about. I’m pretty clumsy so playing sports was usually asking for trouble. Somehow putting skates on my feet made me more graceful. Go figure!
What’s your best roller derby memory? My best memory has to be tbe first time I jammed in a Counterstrike game. I had always shyed away from jamming since i thought, as a bigger skater, I wouldn’t be very good at it. I had been working on my endurance and trying to get out of my head. I ended up taking the star a few times that game and was pretty successful. I was most proud of not letting my fear get the best of me and just going for it.
What’s your worst roller derby memory? My worst memory was dislocating and breaking my finger during a scrimmage. There is nothing like seeing your finger bent the wrong way and having to pop it back in…. yuck.
Why do you play roller derby? Roller derby is an crucial part of my self care. It forces me to take care of my body and mind so that I can be my best person/skater. I love all of the friends I’ve made, the competition, and the confidence i’ve built from realizing all of the amazing things I can do with my perfectly imperfect body.
Gear you couldn’t live without? Right now? Shoulder brace. Take care of your shoulders people. They are precious
Likes? Cupcakes (obviously), dogs, mangoes, naps, and SPRINT PYRAMIDS!!!!
Dislikes? Burpees, super hot weather, olives, tomatoes and baby corn.
What do you do when you aren’t skating? I love to paint, bake treats, and play video games. I also love going on day trips with my lovely girlfriend.
