Derby Name: Sigourney Cleaver

Derby #: 1013

Is there a story behind your name and number? Coming up with a derby name can be hard–you search literally everywhere for inspiration. One day, it occurred to me that I’ve been a fan of Sigourney Weaver’s since I saw Ghostbusters when I was about 4 years old, and there’s no denying that she’s usually a bad ass. What better way to pay homage to a great actor than to call myself Sigourney Cleaver? I’m also a huge X-Files fan, and 10/13 is an important number within that universe. It’s just another homage to one of my favorite parts of life.

What year did you start roller derby? March 2013

What roller derby team(s) have/do you play for? So far, I’ve been a Battleground Bettie and a member of Counterstrike

Your Athletic background? I played volleyball for a season in high school. Other than that, musicals. If you want to test your endurance, do a kick line while singing with a Styrofoam fork strapped to your back.

Any derby/sports heroes? As cliche as it is, every single person who plays derby is a hero to me. It takes guts and courage to strap on a pair of skates and hit people. As for other sports heroes, Kerri Strug has always been one to me. Watching her nail that landing in the 1996 Olympics with an injured ankle was absolutely incredible and I think the truest testament to mind over matter. I also greatly admire Bethany Hamilton–how many other people can have their arm ripped off by a shark while surfing, then go on to become one of the top surfers in the world? She’s incredible and inspirational.

Best derby memory? I don’t have a single great derby memory–almost all of the moments have been epic in some way. But one that’s way up there would probably be passing freshmeat. It was an early moment in my derby career, but an important one.

Worst derby memory? As far as worst memories go, I suffer from Jamnesia, so if anything negative happens, I don’t retain it, not in any real way. Everything in derby happens so fast that you blink and you miss it. You learn from all of it, and getting all riled up doesn’t change anything.

Why do you play roller derby? The first moment I saw the Gate City All Stars play, I knew I had to be a part of Greensboro Roller Derby. There are other reasons, but that was the first one.

Gear you couldn’t live without? Really good knee pads. All of it is important, but you land on your knees a lot more than you realize until you have knee pads that suck.

Likes: I like cookies and hugs and people that are awesome.

Dislikes: I dislike people who aren’t awesome and burnt cookies.*

Anything else we should know about you? I’m not really angry–that’s just my face.

*this isn’t true; I like all cookies equally and will eat the burnt ones as well
